Posted in: Osaka Expo draws 119,000 visitors on opening day See in context

“Visitor satisfaction” is unfortunately lost among those consistently focused on greater attendance numbers.

Haven't been to USJ these days but I can confirm that unless you're Disney wise regarding the apps, reservations and all the other tricks required to enjoy what the park was supposed to offer, you're basically paying ¥10.000 to walk around, you can't even eat what you want as there is also a reservation system for restaurants, unless you want to spend 1 or 2 hours in a queue, hungry.

I will be in Osaka during Obon, hopefully it will be easy to get in and have a look.

I hate crowds and unnecessary queuing

Posted in: Japanese banks block withdrawals from expired foreign resident accounts See in context

What a panic from people.

Bank will first notify the owner of the account several times. When still no reaction the account will be blocked. If after several years there is no contact with the account owner the money will be government money.

So it is up to the account owner to handle and communicate.

FALSE.

Last year I tried to withdraw money from the ATM (Yucho) and it displayed the message I have to update my Zairyu card with the staff first so I could use my Debit card.

They "blocked" my account (maybe only debit card?) 1 day after my period of stay expired, no letters, e-mail, nothing.

[You can't withdraw your own money, proceed to the counter]

What happens when your period of stay expires while you are waiting for your visa to be renewed? You will still be living in Japan legally but without access to your own money.

> So if your visa expires while you are in hospital after an accident that happened while you were on a business trip or on holiday then you won’t be able to access your money in Japan to pay for that treatment?

That's why I usually recommend the 3 months window to friends.. if your visa expires on October 1st, start your renewal on July already, otherwise it will be hell if your visa expires while waiting, having to "explain yourself" to your banks, paypal, credit cards companies, health insurance, my number, etc.... and some won't even accept the stamp of "visa renewal being processed" as a proof you're legal here.

Renewal your visa as soon as it's 90 days away to expire or face the risk, anxiety and stress of waiting for your new card/notification to pick up just a few days before it expires.

Reason #239442 I'm considering naturalization.

Not interested in voting.

Current passport is not weak either.

Just sometimes I feel like there are waay too many "bugs" related to foreign names, period of stay, etc.

It definitely won't change a inch regarding how Japanese people will see me, but at least I won't have to deal with these issues and also the immigration anymore.

Posted in: Driver arrested after ramming his car into another man’s car in Sendai See in context

Attempted murder a bit extreme .....I bet the driver just wanted to scare the hell out of him.

This doesn't work here, Japanese laws are not perfect and things like "self-defense" are non-existent.

If a psycho clings to your front glass, side mirrors for whatever the reason and you drive for mere 5 meters, you will be arrested for "attempted murder"

Couldnt care less, as long as this guy is gone forever.

I came to Japan to see Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, Gackt, Hirai Ken and the types you only see on tv once in like 5, 10 years.

The main reason I ditched j-tv for good (except for You wa nanishini, Ie tsuite tte iidesuka and the like) is that you always see the same 4 to 5 faces no matter what time of the day you try to watch it. Can't stand that guy (Ariyoshi?) either

Posted in: Tourists, locals enjoy 'ephemeral' Tokyo cherry blossoms See in context

There are Sakura trees everywhere. No need to congregate in the same place.

In fact, from the more than 190 places I have saved on my sakura map (Google Maps), around 4/5 are completely random little parks etc. I happen to drive by with views out of this world and 0 tourists.

You can't pay me enough to visit those super crowded parks in Tokyo around this season.

Gongendo tsutsumi is an exception though, the contrast between cherry blossoms and mustard fields is always breath taking no matter how many times you visit it!

I'd just like to point it out going to a political protest as a foreigner in Japan can lead to the same fate so be careful out there.

I think the oldest case I remember is of an American deported for taking part in an anti-Vietnam war protest in Tokyo. If you plan to settle in Japan it's just not worth the risk, at least not until you naturalize, so you will finally be granted free speech without repercussions to your visa.

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele had posted "Oopsie ... Too late" on social media on Sunday in response to an article on the judge's ruling, adding a crying-with-laughter emoji.

Bukele’s a genius—El Salvador just took 238 Tren de Aragua thugs and 23 MS-13 monsters from the U.S., locking them in CECOT while making prisons self-sustainable through the Zero Idleness program. This slashes their $200 million prison costs, all while the U.S. pays a low fee—a win-win Trump orchestrated. Patriots, this is the border security we voted for, crushing gangs the left’s judges protect by blocking the Alien Enemies Act.

24h Seiyu is a life saver.

The only Trial I've been (Chiba) was like a pooly lit Target, huge but a bit dark so no enjoyment in finding new stuff. Prices were also average.

OK Store all the way.

I love the "mini Costco" Lopia store, just a shame they only accept cash, otherwise I'd head there every other day of the week on my way home to grab one of they huge & yummy 'osozai'

"No one will ever able to figure out how to call my son but at least its original so that's ok"

Having to explain your own name to pretty much everyone who will ever read it at hospitals, schools, workplaces, city halls, what a completely avoidable pain in the arse.

You'll need a Type 2 Driving License and a Hi Ace, but yes, there is money to be made moving folks around.

I've discussed this with my high schooler son, who likes cars and motorbikes but hates studying.

You gotta do what you gotta do If you want to maintain your lifestyle and actually own your own time and spend it everyday wherever and however you want.

There is plenty of money to make from this tourist boom and staying in a office is not an option. Transportation + real estate + export business, all in 1 day and you can get ¥150.000~/day very easily and get home before 3pm.

Hopefully the number of tourists will double in a few years.
