no matter how much you “conform” these fascists would never accept you, there is no point in wasting time trying to please these racist psychos.

The government is doing the right thing. They only need to look to Europe, the US/Canada and Australia to see what happens when governments do nothing about immigrant problems.

Funny, when I visit Australia I have a great time and enjoy all the different food, people, openness etc, it's a really awesome modern place. Sydney has a massive China town and even a little Tokyo and Seoul. Seems to be going fine there.

Newflash, it's going to be hotter next year, and the year after that, and every year after that until we stop burning fossil fuels (at least).

I get the feeling we’ve just accepted climate change , and give up on doing anything about it. We were warned. Sad.

Can almost guarantee it was someone using a phone. Phone use while driving is absolutely out of control and Japan doesn’t have the policing powers to prevent it. Hopefully the emperor or some other high profile figure asks the public to stop and people obey.

He said it was not possible to draw a direct link between the current weather conditions and climate change.

But a changing climate has been observed "over many years", he added.

"It's the additives," she said. "And the food is not from Japan. It's all imported. Because I'm Japanese, shouldn't I want to eat Japanese food? It's like local production for local consumption. Our food self-sufficiency rate is low."

Hope this woman can throw a shovel around because the reason the food self-sufficiency is low is complicated but clearly it has something to do with the older generation dying off, they knew who knew how to farm and didn't spend their time feeling victimized on socials, they just got to work. I know as I have many friends in this category.

What's interesting is in Australia, a LOT of the farm worker are young Japanese travelers who can easily get a visa (because Australia likes foreigners) and because the wages are good...weird...

I've noticed even some of my "friends" on socials are posting anti-foreigner stuff lately, there has been some anti-foreigner bullying and attacks at the local school too. Absolutely nothing was done to address it, but that's standard I guess.

Amid growing discontent with economic malaise and record-breaking numbers of inbound tourists

All foreigners contribute as much or more as the locals, yet we can't even vote, and somehow we have preferential treatment?

Yeah nothing will fix your economy like, ruining your image on a world stage, destroying your auto industry (no one will buy Japanese anything if racism takes hold), China will benefit massively and foreign countries will start to reclaim Japanese interests abroad should they do ban foreign land ownership...I mean where to start really?

I feel sorry for these young, lost, disenfranchised people, but it's also up to them to find their brains and save themselves without blaming others.

The government wants to use the soil for building road and railway embankments among other projects.

The Government should be required to report where it’s been used already. There’s a lot of shady looking bags of soil around Nagano and Niigata, I’d love to know more about where it’s been used already. Not because I’m really worried , but I think we have a right to know about it.

Posted in: Emergency reserves, high prices, rationing. How did Japan's rice crisis get this far? See in context

The government has long paid farmers to cut back on rice acreage, and change to other crops to keep rice prices relatively high.

There is your problem right there. It worked. They kept rice prices high.

Very clever.

Good, they’ve scattered it all over Central Japan. You see it in black. plastic 1 ton bags with numbers spray painted on it.

Buried it all over the place from river embankments to under roads.

Going to be nice when all the bags disintegrate into the rivers.

Maybe make sure there’s a bunch of big black plastic bags on display there too ,‘just to get the full experience?

Could get it for as low as 1500 yen for 5kg just a while ago..... and they want of make 3000 the new norm??

The article lacks basic context ,but I think your theory is the correct one.

I’ve been working in a prime rice growing area , they produced more last year than almost ever before. It was a record crop.

"Are you going to take responsibility as prime minister if rice prices don't fall into the 3,000 yen range?" DPP chief Yuichiro Tamaki asked Ishiba

What kind of idiot question is that?

As if Ishiba (or anyone) can control the weather.

I actually thought the same thing. It’s a free market society. Unless we start advocating for government intervention on the price of goods (which would be 10x worse) then it’s not really his problem to solve. There might be economic knobs and dials he can play with to try improve the situation but outside of that…the price of rice is what it is. What should he honestly do to solve it ?

Get rid of the consumption tax…it’s that simple. We all pay enough tax in this country and we’re not seeing a positive ROI.

Yes, Japan's consumption tax hike in 2019 had a negative impact on the economy. While the tax increase, from 8% to 10%, was intended to fund social security, concerns about its effect on consumer spending and overall GDP were realized.

I remember Japan before that tax and it was a much happier vibrant place.

As a person who went through and who's family and life were deeply effected by the Noto Earthquake. No matter how much you prepared you will never be prepared for any 7.0 or above Earthquake. Especially if the Earthquake's is shallow with a depth is just under 10 kms.

Sorry to hear this and not to downplay what you’ve said but I believe the Noto situation was worse because it’s not really a place that has been expecting an earthquake of that magnitude so as you said nothing can prepare you, but it was probably one of the less prepared places in Japan compared to Tokyo.

I do agree with your sentiment though. We felt Noto quake strongly and it was properly intense.

Huge natural disasters are possible in many places around the world, not just in Japan.

Off the top of my head, mega disasters with over a hundred thousand fatalities are possible, even likely, in Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, the islands of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean, and California. No doubt there are places I omitted

much higher population density, certainty of quakes and tsunami risk in Japan than most of those places you’ve cited. It’s a way bigger and certain issue for the Japanese.
