It's not an unreasonable goal. About 1% real growth and 2% inflation per annum would be needed.

Posted in: Top court rejects claim dual nationality ban is unconstitutional See in context

Japanese who are dual citizens at birth can generally keep both passports even though in theory they should give one up when they become adults. You can not obtain dual Japanese citizenship as an adult. If, for example, an American applies for and is granted Japanese citizenship, they must give up their US citizenship. If they don't, Japan will rescind their Japanese citizenship and possibly throw them in jail.

Other than beating people, what would a stick of that size be used for in a home? Sounds premeditated.

Posted in: Ishiba says discussion of security issues in tariff talks not appropriate See in context

In 90 days, Trump has already destroyed all the US alliances with other democracies. Even Japan has its limits. It's time to recognize that the post-WWII period is ending and a new era is beginning, an era in which the US will not try to promote peace, prosperity, freedom, and democracy around the world.

Posted in: Science caught in crossfire of Trump's fight with universities See in context

It was inevitable that, over time, the US would lose the dominant position it had at the end of WWII. In 90 days, Trump has accelerated that process by decades. Every institution that makes America great is under attack. It's hard to imagine how far the country will fall over the next four years.

In case it's not obvious to you by now, Trump has no intention of obeying the constitution or any law. Courts are blocking some of his illegal actions, or at least trying to. The administration has already lost more than 50 federal cases. But in the end, the only way to stop him is impeachment. Now, keeping in mind that trying to overthrow the results of the 2020 election wasn't enough, ask yourself, what would Trump have to do to get 20 Republican senators to convict him?

Posted in: Trump places 25% tariff on all imported autos from April 2 See in context

There's a reason that no advanced economy has done something this stupid with tariffs since the 1930s. US manufacturing output has basically been flat for the last 25 years. Significantly boosting domestic production will require real wages closer to its competitors and lower living standards.

It's clear that the misinformation is not limited to podcasts and "influencers". Much of it comes from "respected medical institutes", who parrot what their funders tell them.

You've got that right, in particular some of the stuff coming out of Harvard lately is ridiculous.

Norway, it's sovereign wealth fund is worth USD 1.8 trillion. Switzerland is around 32% debt-to-GDP.

Posted in: Trump aid freeze stirs chaos before it is blocked in court See in context

This order was already blocked by a Federal judge even as the administration tries to "clarify" it. It is totally illegal and they won't get away with it. Trump has already violated his oath at least a dozen times. The question is, when will Trump start to violate court orders? Impeachment and the 25th amendment are the only ways to stop him.

Posted in: Bank of Japan poised to raise rates to highest in 17 years See in context

BoJ needs to hike rates to defend the yen and keep inflation expectations anchored to it's 2% target. Higher interest rates hurt with government debt at 250% of GDP, they should be tightening the budget to help reduce inflationary pressure instead of wasting ever more money.

The solution isn't difficult: build more hotels. If you can really sell out small rooms in a business hotel for Y20k a night, there's a profit to be made.
