OMG.

As if humans haven't screwed up this poor planet enough.

Posted in: Food price hikes in Japan projected for over 20,000 items in 2025 See in context

What a depressing picture - shelves packed full of ultra processed 'food'.

We are in full gear this year with our home produce.

More people should consider growing their own food, for better food security and health.

President Donald Trump's dismantling of domestic climate policies

Should be sued for negligence and dereliction of duty to protect the well-being of the nation.

Crass ignorance at best.

More trees - the only truly effective way to cool urban area.

Posted in: Peanuts or almonds? Rice or millet? Planet-friendly grocery shopping choices go beyond cutting meat See in context

Need better food labelling for people to make more informed choices or at least to be aware of the true impact their consumption patters are having on the rest of the world.

Carbon, water footprints etc.

“It’s people like this, who think of things the rest of us don’t, that are saving the world.”

I hope this comment was intended to be sarcastic.

but if people do change, and if we do reduce or turn around our climate emissions

So, in other words, the situation is truly a bleak one for this magnificent species.

Posted in: Japan is not doing enough to avoid 'toilet panic' in disasters See in context

We have one regular toilet and one compost toilet in our house. The compost toilet needs very little water. Probably not a feasible option in cities though.

And how does making fossil fuel cheaper contribute to the already woeful efforts at lowering carbon emissions - as promised?

And still, such informative and important stories are not headline news.

I hope anyone reading this article, will read the whole thing and consider the magnitude of the situation before commenting.

Posted in: Tokyo to waive basic water fees to help cope with extreme summer heat See in context

offsetting water costs will encourage residents not to hold back on using their air conditioning to stay cool

I find it difficult to see the connection between the two. does anyone choose equate using less water with a decision to use AC or not?

Posted in: UK lab promises air-con revolution without polluting gases See in context

This is good news but more efforts should be made to design new buildings and retrofit older ones to be more energy efficient, and to take advantage of passive/natural cooling and warming features.

We designed and built our own house and don't have any need for air conditioners.

Posted in: China says wind and solar energy capacity exceeds thermal for first time See in context

while stating that installed wind and solar now exceed installed thermal power plants, the article also states that 60% of their energy currently comes from burning coal. Seems like the two statements are mutually exclusive.

Headline: ... wind and solar energy capacity exceeds thermal ...

Key word is capacity.

Solar and wind capacity can now potentially produce more than coal, but rarely will the sun and wind offer 100% capacity at any one time.

Posted in: Bus driver who pocketed 1,000 yen in fares denied 12 million yen in retirement money See in context

Seems extremely unfair.

Particularly given that politicians and the rich 'elite' almost always get off with suspended sentences after embezzling etc. billions of yen.

That does not look like a fun day out.

There are so many stunning hikes in Japan.

Why choose this overcrowded, bland landscape as your hiking destination?

Posted in: Osaka Expo opens for 6-month event focused on sustainable society See in context

designing a sustainable future society, in what organizers hope will boost the domestic economy

Current human eco footprint is around 1.8 earths. The word sustainable and growth are now mutually impossible.

Steady-state economics is the only rational way forward.

I haven't been to a McDonald's since 2018.

I was travelling on a budget in Australia and Fille'o'fish were around $1 (Au).

Posted in: Where's my car? Toyota buyers face long waits due to hybrid boom See in context

My 1995 Toyota Hilux Surf is a kind of hybrid. We run it using a two tank WVO system.

The main tank is for Waste Vegetable Oil and the smaller tank is for diesel, which is used for the first 3 minutes and last 3 minutes of a journey to ensure the engine only receives vegetable oil when it's warm.

Posted in: Japan's decaying abandoned buildings seen as posing danger See in context

13 years ago I took down a 4 bedroomed house - (an old country pension) by hand. Using a crowbar, sledge hammer, and rope. It took five solid weeks..

Upcycled all the wood and had only one skip's worth of non-recyclable material.

Was a tough, but rewarding experience.

Posted in: Tokyo's rice prices surge 90% in March on year: CPI data See in context

We now grow most of the Japanese rice we consume.

There are many empty rice fields that could be producing, but seems the government is incapable of fostering policies that could invigorate the local agriculture sector.

Better eduction that valued agriculture as a key industry, and a less consumerist society would help.
