Posted in: Japan's free high school policy may provoke exodus from public schools See in context
I support the public schools being freely accessible to families, but surely subsidizing private schools just sabotages public schools standing here?
It seems to me that most Japanese think private education is often better, so with private education being 'free' more folks will send their kids to them. Therefore in a shrinking population situation fewer kids will go public. Public schools will have budgets slashed ( making the education and opportunities they provide even worse and it turns into a downward spiral ) and eventually closed/consolidated and the government won't have to pay for so many. Is that the end goal?
After many public schools are closed, when it comes time to open them because of an influx of children they won't be able to.
Also having seen what many private schools offer, I question if they are really all that good in the first place.

The problem is, the most well known 'lone wolf' attack got the guy exactly what he wanted. So it has shown that killing politicians gets them active. (Obviously not the same ones.
These attacks (3 of them BTW) all stem from people feeling powerless and being unable to enact change in the current system.
Police also reached agreements with three real estate industry groups in May for the sharing of information about suspicious noises and odors in buildings, after cases in which assailants manufactured weapons and explosives in their apartments.
I'm sure this is a very effective program. . I'd be genuinely curious to know how much information, useful or otherwise has been gleaned from it. My neighbour likes to do some hammering at odd times fairly often. Maybe they're making weapons?

This new immersive experience is designed to be a red pill moment that will get film fans off their couches at a time when the movie industry is desperate to bring back audiences.
This would work well for well designed cinemas, but you're average rectangle theatre in complex number 4 won't have quite the Sem effect.
Another reason for dwindling movie goers is the garbage they've been churning out as the big thing for the past few (10?) years.

Part of the reason for people using AI to search the web is because of the intrusive adverts.
Google used to be a really good search engine. Now it promotes irrelevant results far too much which completely destroys the advantage the Google search engine had over other engines. Googling may be a verb for web searching, but I can see it's usage changing as their search engine gets worse.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't understand why Patriotism or Nationalism should be a bad thing.
A bit of love for one's country and patriotism is a fine and good thing to have. The problems arise when it is descriminatory which immediately creates 'others'. Add to that patriotism can be easily encouraged to unhealthy fanatic levels. Which we have seen Japan do in the past. Many other countries too, and a rather influential one (at least) doing it now.
Tldr. Patriotism isn't the problem. People are the problem.

I don't think the comments are about lack of gratitude. I think it's more about trying to see the connection.
I'm not a brit and this policy is a bit of head scratcher. If they want to encourage people to cool with air con (short term solution) then they should subsidise electricity, not water bills.

this would only apply to people who follow the rules. This article is about those who don't follow the rules.
I agree with the mayor. There should be some kind of punishment or fine to discourage people from off season/dangerous climbing.

Posted in: Japan's gold standard health insurance system at politicization risk See in context
I've often wondered about that. If healthy people don't require medical treatment so much, what happens to all the money that they pay for healthcare insurance?
Usually it goes into a communal govt pot to aid paying for people who do require medical care. Which is how Japan's health care is still affordable now.
Currently Japan faces a problem of fewer healthy young people (paying their taxes and stuff) than people using the medical system.
In a perfect system, society would have enough people paying into the system, yet not using it, to sustain the cost of use for those who need it.

The primary factors contributing to the high prices are a combination of supply shortages, speculative hoarding, and a general reluctance to sell new harvests.
My guess with the Chinese mainlanders rumour and google ai not finding sources could be down. To no-one knowing who the speculative hoarders are.
I think the govt should step in and start fining/jailing these speculators and hoarders. After all they have the brilliantly general law against interruption of business.

Really?
China is demanding South Korean businesses not to ship goods containing China's rare earth minerals to U.S. defense companies or face likely sanctions.
Earlier this month, Beijing warned that no country should reach a deal with the U.S. at China's expense and vowed to take countermeasures in a “resolute and reciprocal manner” should such a situation arise.
They both seem pretty similar in their actions to be honest.
China is known for, and often has used trade as a way to enforce their ideas. Usually with superficial reasoning. Cough Japanese fish cough Australian wine.
The list will continue.

Capital punishment is obviously the best deterrent. No executed prisoner has ever gone on to commit more crime.
I don't t think you know what deterrent is. It's supposed to stop people before they commit a crime.
Therefore capital punishment here didn't work here as the crime was committed .
As a general rule. People who commit crimes that end up with capital punishment probably aren't thinking of the consequences, or perhaps as has been the case in Japan more than once, they want the punishment. In which, capital punishment is an incentive...
