"It was quite an unpleasant time for a lot of people, if you were a woman or if you were an ethnic minority or if you were not heterosexual," she said.

I'm an ethnic minority, and I had a blast in the 90's.

Where do they find these miserable sods?

Sir Rod received a lifetime achievement honour and sang "Forever Young," released in 1984. Somethine for everyone.

I've never been in the navy, but I expect the sales of Chinese made blue tarps has spiked in NK, offsetting the drop in demand due to US tariffs.

Next, all those towels needed to dry that ship out is also a great for Chinese suppliers.

Posted in: For train fans: What is the most enjoyable train ride you have ever taken? Where did you go to and what sort of train was it? See in context

I was nine years old when I had a two hour ride on a sugarcane train in Fiji. I have clear memories of it. A relative was running a sugar mill so I was a last minute addition. It was tropical and the ride flowed through flat areas of cane, through bush and along the coast by Duvu. When we stopped to load more farmers cars to the train, women would give us the hottest, sweetest condensed milk tea with flat bread and curried shrimps.

The little engine was really working hard and they were such nice people. Dreamlike.

Posted in: New Zealand PM proposes banning under-16s from social media See in context

The move sparked a fierce backlash from big tech companies who variously described the laws as "rushed", "vague", and "problematic".

Rushed? No it's just a proposal.

Vague? No, it's very simple.

Problematic? Certainly - for tech company weasels who avoid paying taxes to jurisdictions, but then expect to have some say on societal problems.

Have to admit that the vulture is not one of my go-to birds, but I understand the important role they play.

Now that they're valued at a hefty $1.8m, I'm getting behind the vulture.

Posted in: China not backing down as fresh U.S. tariff threat pushes tensions to the brink See in context

"The U.S. side's threat to escalate tariffs against China is a mistake on top of a mistake, once again exposing the American side's blackmailing nature,"

So says China, after they applied punitive tariffs on Australian goods - 80% on barley, 40% on cotton, 206% on wine plus completely banning Australian meat, timber trade among others.

Only because the Australian government called the CCP out on their political interference and the Chinese origin of COVID.

Hopefully Australian consumers remember this when China starts looking for alternative markets for their junk.

Posted in: Australian PM lures voters with supermarket price gouging crackdown See in context

There is certainly profit taking by supermarkets, but I think consumers are just lazy.

I drive past most gas stations to get to the discount stations, but will always see the expensive stations humming with business even when they are 20c -30c more expensive.

Consumers always complain about price but always pay for convenience.

Posted in: China's Xi urges global CEOs to protect trade as Trump tariffs loom See in context

Typically two-faced. When Australia told the CCP to butt out of their affairs, huge tariffs were placed on Australian exports - 80% on barley, 200+% on wine which were withdrawn last year, among others.

So 25% duties on Chinese crap is pretty mild.

“Shoppers have begun to see shell egg offerings in the dairycase becoming more reliable although retail price levels have yet to adjust and remain off-putting to many,” the USDA wrote in the March 7 report."

In basic lingo:

Shoppers are seeing egg price stabilize but are not buying because of the high price.
