These "laws" are already in place. They're just ignored by everyone.

Tariffs are a domestic tax, right? So why is any country paying attention to this nonsense.

"If you don't give a better deal, I'm going to make our American importers pay more!"

I just don't get it. Educate me if I'm wrong, please.

If it's remodelling the currently 10 million empty homes, then yes. If it's knocking down beautiful old houses to put up cardboard shoeboxes for a rapidly declining population, then no.

If he lives in Osaka, it should be free - he and his children's children will have to pay for this expo.

South Park nailed this issue (as usual) with the "Strong Woman Competition". I won't add a link, but a 3min clip is on youtube.

And 10 years ago Putin spoke with Elton to say that he had no problems with gay people. Prior to that, he also called Elton John a " real man" and he loved the song Nikita (can't be bothered to find the links, but happened). How times change.

Just rewatched Top Secret yesterday. Favourite lines Dr: this machine will remove salt from sea water. Kilmer: wow, people could have all the salt they want. (may not be word perfect).

He was a good actor from the start.

If you're talking about America, fair enough. If you're talking about Afghanistan, try looking at images of there before the religious nutjobs took over.

Posted in: In the media, the term 'overtourism' is often confused with a lack of etiquette and overcrowding. It's questionable whether foreign tourists alone are the cause. There are people with poor manners among both foreigners and Japanese people. See in context

I once castigated a Japanese couple in Guam who were letting their children run around and picking their noses and wiping them on the windows. Ive also had a go with Japanese tourists here in Kyoto, but I'm a foreigner and "don't understand Japan". I understand good manners and it's not just foreigners that break them.

As the joke goes, we always thought Russia was the second strongest army in the world. Now we know it's the second strongest army in Ukraine. I'd rather have Ukraine and UK in NATO than the US.

"Western"? The diets of Serbia, Spain and Sweden are "Western" and are very different. This kind of article annoys anyone who actually knows what Japanese people eat. Things like karaage and other meat dishes with more fat than meat would be unacceptable for many westerns. After having spoken to many students over the years, I have to agree with kohakuebisu and say those pictures (and ideas) and completely unrealistic.

I don't drive and just cycle everywhere I go. Some drivers think pedestrians and cyclists should get out of their way - if they bother to notice them.

I could fill pages and pages of near-misses I've had here.

You cannot learn to drive in two weeks, teach them to bloody drive properly.

Posted in: A record 59% of private universities in Japan failed to meet their enrollment quotas this past spring due to the country's declining birthrate. What do you think this means for universities in Japan in the future? See in context

Mr KiplingToday 06:41 am JST

There are 704* "universities" in Japan. Less than 50 are worth going to. They are basically just businesses so just let them fail.

Completely agree with you. We are pressured to pass even obvious cheating or lack of attendance - "can't you give them an extra essay?" to students who can't string a sentence together, but hand in perfect essays they don't understand. Or who have been to half the classes and done nothing.

*Actually, there are 810 "universities" that's almost 300 more than when I last checked 10yrs ago.

> You're right, the WWW would not be possible without the Internet. And Apple, Microsoft, and Google are slightly more important than Babbage from a modern perspective.

And the Internet would not be possible without, Babbage, Lovelace, Turing and a whole bunch of Polish geniuses.

My point, as others have pointed, is that America didn't invent everything.

I'm done with this silly conversation - only losers try to win on online forums.

JeffLeeToday 07:01 am JST

The US always leads the way. Inventor of the internet, mobile phone, wifi, online commerce and now generative artificial intelligence.

The mobile phone, WiFi and E-commerce were not invented in the US. AI was first proposed by Alan Turing (UK) and the computer was given to the US by the UK.

Apart from that, spot on.
