Posted in: Gold investments booming in Japan as U.S. tariffs stir economic fears See in context

I came here for the comments, but read the story. This just proves how smart and savvy Japanese investors are. Gold rules. It always has. When the Fragmented States of America took themselves off the gold standard, all hell broke loose. I'm talking footloose. Get off your golden goose. Loose! Seriously, people! Wake up an smell the bullion. Japan is coming back.

This is so sad. Foley was amazing. It was this particular work that inspired me to make better music videos. Time for a tribute, me thinks.

Who are we to decide which animals are OK to eat or not to eat? Really. So many of our rules defy the rules of nature. Who is going to miss a hermit crab?

Posted in: S Korean temple returns stolen Buddha statue to Japanese owner See in context

Funny how JT and its readers, as well as the media, nationalize religious issues between temples. Besides making South Korea sound bad for having a "stolen" Buddha action figure, it also seemingly pins the blame on sour relations Korea's fault. In return, Japan should return Dokdo to Korea and Okinawa to Okinawa. Fair is fair, after all. It is what the Buddha would've wanted, me thinks.

Posted in: How to break up with your partner in Japanese See in context

The article neglected to mention if it is acceptable to use these phrases on the fax we have to send to our partners. I think a fax is a step up from a lazy break-up text.. Soldiers, after all, mused to get Dear John letters.

I am surprised the police approved the use of a technology that would reduce the need for overtime, manpower and unnecessary rigmarole. AI will surely reunite many folks with their missing beloved possessions.

This is so sad. Why? At least the monster had enough common sense or remorse to turn himself in, But, again, meaningless and violent loss of life is so sad.

Posted in: Japan's FY2025 defense-related outlay to total 1.8% of FY2022 GDP See in context

A strong Japan is a good Japan. 1.8% is still insufficient, however, especially considering how their GDP rank has dropped. The threat of the CCP is real and a militarization is key. Conscription is also a good idea. Make Nippon Strong Again.

Posted in: Two men arrested for attempted robbery after attacking man with iron bar See in context

This should send a message to criminals. The Japanese Police is the best in the world. The iron bar was probably stolen from a construction site. Wishing the victim a speedy recovery. Broken cheekbones tend to hurt quite a bit.

Posted in: Solar-powered smart wear to be trialed at Osaka Expo See in context

Expo will be an excellent chance for Japan to showcase its superior products, innovations, and entertainment. Hopefully, not too much space will be wasted on foreign booths. The world is coming to Japan to experience Japan and see Japan;s exposition; to the world.

Posted in: Man arrested for filming up woman's skirt with smartphone at shopping center See in context

The article doesn't mention what type of smartphone, which leads me to believe he may have been coerced by malware on a foreign brand smartphone. Japanese smartphones make sounds so people can't do this behavior without being noticed. I don't think foreign phones do this because it is not a problem outside of Japan.

Posted in: Richard Chamberlain, who starred in 'Dr Kildare,' 'Shogun,' dies at 90 See in context

Legend. Chamberlain inspired my Shogun themed songs I wrote in elementary school. Might be time for a tribute album, me thinks. 90 is a good age. Hawaii's climate surely helped. Japan has Okinawa and the US has Hawaii.

Posted in: Japan Today Spotlight #9 | The Tokyo sarin gas attacks: 30 years later See in context

Unfortunately, the attack illustrates Japan's propensity for domestic terrorism. But, somehow, Japan is made out to be safer than other countries where terrorism has happened. Still compared to natural disasters, the fatalities total is way lower. Just hope people can be vigilant and prevent more attacks, random stabbings, and assassinations of unpopular politicians.

Posted in: Japanese man gets 7 years in prison in Belarus for spying for Japanese intelligence See in context

Which Japanese "authorities?" Once his identity as a spy is revealed they will change their statement surely. Even in supposedly free countries, photographing military installations is a no-no. Seven years sounds fair and should give him time to reflect on his actions.

Why would this character take it upon himself to harm the Japanese economy and desecrate Japanese whaling culture? Someone should call Interpol on this guy.

Posted in: Mount Fuji climbers to be charged ¥4,000 on all trails See in context

Well, it is a 'foreign tourists thing' now isn't it? How else would all that foreign litter wind up on Huzi-san? It's not like the tide and currents from Korea brought it over. The local officials who passed this should be commended. Their predecessors should've done it years ago. 4000 seems cheap. It's high time Japan leaned a lesson from Hawaii. Diamond Head had too many foreign (Japanese mostly) tourists and now charges. Doubters will see that this works. The revenue will help to both filter out idiots and with safety and beautification.

Posted in: Police warn public about surge in scam calls using police station number on caller ID See in context

If the scammers haven't been caught and are using a Tokyo police phone number, the scammers could very well be members of the police. It is,from what I've seen in based on true story movies, harder to catch corrupt cops than regular criminals. And, while it is nice for the police to offer futile advice, it does kind of make them seem like they don't want to work on catching anyone but just want the problem to go away.

Posted in: Smoking areas in clubhouse, no pitch clock: MLB players get a little taste of baseball in Japan See in context

Having a smoking area is tantamount to ensuring the safety and security of the players, coaches and staff of these pro teams. If they are forced to go outside for a smoke, they could be accosted. If they sneak one somewhere, fire alarms could go off and cause pandemonium. The seams of the baseballs differing is an interesting point. But, regardless of the differences, they are slight and not enough to make excuses over. NPB is the best league on the planet. MLB is just the greediest.

Posted in: Unification Church faces dissolution in Japan See in context

Shocking. So unfair. As soon as there are unfounded rumors regarding a foreign bank or church, there is a witch-hunt here. It is not the Unification Church's fault corrupt politicians get targeted by patriots. This is akin to blaming any elementary school or kindergarten for the future crimes or poor decisions of the kids who went through them. I truly hope the church appeals and continues to offer services for those inclined to practice their religion of choice freely.

Posted in: Ohtani, 4 other Japanese players come home to start MLB season See in context

It's a good thing there are 4 Japanese players because the MLB team couldn't even get a single run against the NPB team today. Japan schooled America at baseball yet again. No idea why the MLB is popular when clearly the NPB is the superior league. Must be money.

Posted in: Massive sinkhole in Saitama highlights risk of old pipes See in context

After reading this shocking and sad report, I can;t help but think that not enough has been done in the rescue effort. The JSDF probably could have extracted the man in minutes. Couldn't some local contractor have used an electromagnet crane? And, regarding the sinkhole, all they need to do is create air vortexes to send thru the pipes to make sure they don't collapse further. There are videos on YouTube that show how to make DIY air vortex cannons. With all these resources unused it seems such a shame. Still hoping for a miracle. The poor driver must be terrified down there.

Posted in: OpenAI announces new 'deep research' tool for ChatGPT ahead of Tokyo meeting See in context

Japanese media is sensationalizing China's foray into AI. Why fan the coals when just straight reporting would suffice? It is also interesting how announcements always seem to happen ahead of "meetings." Do any other readers get the vibration that these meetings are when bribe amounts are discussed? SoftBank knows how to manipulate media very well and get almost free advertising. Just by hiring a washed up name baseball player they get a huge return on their investment. Hoping there is more substance to their AI than their expired athletes.

Nice to see other informed readers are realizing this is just smoked and mirrored semantics for spy satellites. More transparency is needed in the spending of your tax Yen. Do the analysis yourselves and determine if the Yen spent on this is actually worth it to you, the taxed resident.

Posted in: Japan, S Korea seek to strengthen ties before Trump takes office See in context

Too late. Trump took office in 2016. When South Korea has to get a new president, they should anoint Kamala Harris. Sometimes an outsider is the best thing for an organization struggling within. But, seriously., that peninsula needs to get it's affairs in order. They've had since the mid-80s to do so, but aside from the Olympics in 1988, seem to keep messing things up. Japan and North Korea are t much help. Just aligning 100% with the US and ignoring EU and ASEAN is the best thing for ROK at the moment. Godspeed their recovery and reclaiming top dog status in Asia.

Outstanding. A stellar performance by Japan. Japanese cameras and optics no doubt contributed greatly to these other worldly shots. Giuseppe Colombo has long been a favorite of mine and one who deserves be immortalized. The naming of the spacecraft was a nice touch, but he deserves greater came. Perhaps record producer could have their artist(s) do a tribute song. Now that would make everybody's Mercury rise right out of the box. man. Great photos. Thanks Bepi and JT and Japan.

Posted in: Father, son arrested for assaulting police officer at Sapporo game center See in context

What duties did they obstruct? Sleeping on the job? Slurping noodles and saying "ahhh" laxly at the koban? They were the police duty! The police were called to sort them out. There was no obstruction whatsoever. This is so absurd. Had police been giving some random bloke a parking ticket and they had acted violently towards the copper, now that would be obstruction. The question begging to be asked here is, however, have otaku become so out of touch that they can't even game properly in a game center? We now have the most harmless least violent and dangerous strand of human acting like caged animals. Oh how Japan has sunken socially...
