Posted in: Rice price cut rush puts Koizumi back in spotlight ahead of election See in context

Selling government stockpiled rice at half the market prices is hurting rice growers who are suffering from high costs of farming and burdened with debt. Koizumi is bad for Japan’s agriculture.

Toyota is desperate. But who in Japan would want to buy gas-guzzling, oversized, left-hand- drive US-made cars?

Maybe Ishiba was trying to be funny. The opposition party leader shouldn’t make a fuss out of it.

The best solution would be using government subsidies to reduce the prices of fine quality rice by half, making it affordable for honorable humans. They’re already doing this to reduce electricity bills and gasoline prices.

Now Koizumi is determined to open up and sell off the domestic rice market to foreign agri-businesses, just as his father did to the Japan Post.

Don’t be fooled by Koizumi’s Grand stand play. Rice prices haven’t come down at all. The LDP government is just selling cattle feed quality stockpiled rice at an exorbitant price of 2000 yen per 5kg in order to win the Upper House election next month.

If you were a death row inmate, would you prefer to be informed of your execution days before and spend agonizing, sleepless nights till the execution day?

How about imposing 25%+10% tariffs on all US-made defense equipment? That would be a great bargaining chip for Japan.

“If I take Japanese citizenship it would have zero effect on my British nationality in the UK or any other country except Japan.”

Not in China and South Korea where dual citizenship is banned. You automatically lose your Chinese or Korean citizenship upon acquiring a foreign nationality.

Ishiba couldn’t have chosen a worse agriculture minister. The nepo baby’s ultimate goal has always been to dismantle JA and sell off Japan’s agriculture to big agri-businesses like Cargill and Bayern. Good luck Mr Koizumi. We all want to see rice prices go down.

Posted in: Emergency reserves, high prices, rationing. How did Japan's rice crisis get this far? See in context

Decades of the government policy to cut back on rice production is the main reason for today’s rice shortages and high prices. Now the average age of rice farmers is over 70 and young people are shying away from agriculture. The future is bleak.

“Japan's trade surplus with the US was $5.9 billion in the month of March. How are you going to make a deal to close that gap?”

When Americans buy imported Japanese cars, they pay in US dollars. Japanese companies can’t take all the dollars they earned in the US back to Japan because the US dollar is not legal tender in Japan. Instead, those companies invest their hard-earned dollars in the US: buying land and building new factories, paying salaries and buying US treasuries (one of the safest investments in the world that pays more than 4% interests). What’s the problem?
