Many enjoyable reads between him and le Carre. He actually lived the life too. And several of his books were made into stellar films. The original 1973 film is outstanding. Edward Fox is amazing in it. Made the mistake of watching the recent tv series remake. What a joke. Dogs of War with Walken is incredible too.

MSG -loaded junk. Gross.

The risks of MSG were a fallacy. Nothing more than an urban myth perpetuated by bad science and the ignorant.

Thankfully, while the fear of MSG continues to echo online, much of the negative hype has died away. It’s still worthwhile reflecting, however, on how such shoddy science became an article of faith in medicine. Kwok, Schaumburg, and Olney may have sincerely wanted to help people. But their story shows that even scientists are suspectable to rumors, hysteria, and urban legends that defy common sense.

The 1960-61 Gibson ES-345 in question was rented from legendary Norman's Rare Guitars in LA and by all accounts was returned to the store after filming. From there, it gets murky. Some say it was sold but the paperwork was lost. Others that it was sent to auction but never made it there. It's a mystery. Vintage ES-345's can go for between $30,000 - $50,000. This one obviously has much more value.

If Norman's can track down its whereabouts or get it back and sell it to someone who'll play it great but it sounds like just a marketing activity to promote the movie's 40th anniversary. This most likely isn't about someone getting back a prized and beloved instrument that was stolen to play once again.

Why would what Lucas said have any bearing?

Because that is what would make it misappropriating, pretending it was something he came up with, since he did not do it then your comment is false.

he amount of ideas he took from the Dune Chronicles is extensive and well documented.

And the same can be said about Dune, and from everything that Dune took something from, and you can go back to prehistory this way.

He didn't even try to alter them that much.

Herbert did the same and sometimes he even copied phrases completely, it is common, it does not mean either misappropriated their sources.

Herbert himself referenced many ideas to write Dune but he had the integrity to customize and alter them accordingly.

The same as Lucas.

Even making a loose connection between SW and space debris is laughable

No, it is not, it is a concept that (as the article mentions) have some importance in the extended universe, there is nothing laughable about it.

SW isn't even sci-fi.

Of course it is. It is science fiction, adventure, space opera, etc.

Provide one passage, one phrase that Frank Herbert copied completely.

Well.....where's the passage you claimed Herbert copied completely????

I seriously doubt that you've even read the book. If you did, you'd know that a writer so meticulous and detailed as Frank Herbert would never copy or plagiarize the way Lucas did.

The rest of what you wrote is the same as your mistaken claim about Herbert. It's all posing.

If you knew anything about sci-fi, you'd realize that SW isn't. Why talk and pretend you're an expert on something you clearly aren't.

Among the many things that Lucas misappropriated from Frank Herbert's Dune was detailed accounts of moisture farming

That is not misappropriating anything, Lucas did not say this was an original concept, as it is common on fiction he just took something that he liked and included in his story, it would be like calling Herbert's influences (like Norman Walter or Lesley Blanch) also misappropriating.

SW's is responsible for the concept of space debris? LOL!

The article never makes this claim, it is simply describing things that are included in SW and that are also real right now, that is very different from saying the movies were the first to come up with the concepts.

Why would what Lucas said have any bearing? LOL! The amount of ideas he took from the Dune Chronicles is extensive and well documented. He didn't even try to alter them that much.

He's lucky that Herbert wasn't a particularly an aggressive person but it did cross his mind.

“I will try hard not to sue,” Herbert told the Associated Press.

Herbert himself referenced many ideas to write Dune but he had the integrity to customize and alter them accordingly.

Even making a loose connection between SW and space debris is laughable. SW isn't even sci-fi. so how can it even have a connection with these scientific concepts. A badly written article by amateurs that was poorly conceived and researched.

Among the many things that Lucas misappropriated from Frank Herbert's Dune was detailed accounts of moisture farming such as wind-traps and dew collectors which are based on similar actual practices. Herbert was deeply interested in environments especially desert habitation.

SW's is responsible for the concept of space debris? LOL!

And true that the concept of midi-chlorians was created by Lucas but as usual, everything is glossed over and no details are provided about it or any other concepts, scientifically, politically, socially, etc. That's why SW isn't sci-fi and just a space fantasy adventure.

Posted in: Australia to Mel Gibson: Save us from Trump's movie tariffs See in context

bass4funkToday  07:40 pm JST

It’s fair to say tariffs should be applied strategically and with consistency, but let’s not pretend Trump invented trade instability—NAFTA itself, signed by Bush Sr. and expanded by Clinton, contributed to decades of job losses in U.S. manufacturing towns. Trump’s renegotiation through the USMCA, while imperfect, addressed long-ignored issues like digital trade and dairy market access, which previous administrations failed to touch. As for Canada, it’s not about blame—it’s about leveling the playing field in industries where the U.S. has long faced lopsided terms.

Regarding internal policies like reducing the military budget or subsidizing film—those are valid debates, but they don’t address trade imbalances or outsourcing directly. Subsidies and budget shifts won’t stop foreign governments from undercutting American industries with state support and predatory pricing. Tariffs, when used as leverage—not out of “anger,” but as part of negotiation—are one of the few tools available to respond to those distortions. Blaming tariffs for rising prices while ignoring decades of offshoring, wage stagnation, and unbalanced trade is a one-sided view. We need both internal reforms and assertive trade policy—not just lectures on decorum.

But it is about blame. When Trump says that Canada is taking advantage of the US, it's not true. It's a clear fabrication to make Canada the scapegoat and raise the ire of uneducated, unknowledgeable, and easily gullible people. When in actuality Canada has been acting in good faith and merely following the tenets of NAFTA and USMCA. These were negotiated not unilaterally forced on the US. Trade imbalance has as much to do with US internal issues as much as global ones yet again Trump uses the opportunity to villainize other countries. It's a two way street but if you listen to Trump's lies, he makes it out as being only one sided. It's not even about decorum. It's about the truth. Canada is not and never has taken advantage.

bass4funkToday  07:01 pm JST

You’re right that economic transitions span decades and involve both parties—but it’s disingenuous to dismiss criticism of Democrats as “mindless blaming” when specific policies and decisions under recent Democratic administrations have clearly accelerated offshoring and regulatory burdens on manufacturers. While economic development does lead to rising costs, that doesn’t mean we should accept the hollowing out of domestic industry as inevitable. Trade tariffs may not be a perfect tool, but they are a response—however imperfect—to decades of unbalanced trade, intellectual property theft, and foreign subsidies that hurt American workers. If anything, the lack of a coherent plan from past administrations is what led to the “seat of your pants” approach. So instead of dismissing tariffs outright, maybe ask why both parties failed to protect American manufacturing until voters demanded action.

The proper way to use tariffs is to set them in place and allow time to evaluate the effects not flip flop them every week and act out of anger and immaturity.

Trump had the opportunity to do this in 2017 with USMCA but he completely flubbed it then falsely claims and blames Canada for taking advantage of the US. The only thing they took advantage of was his poor negotiating skills. That's on him and the US not Canada. And it should be noted that NAFTA was strongly supported and implemented by Reagan and Bush Sr both republicans. Free trade was not a democrat initiative.

There are tons of internal, domestic policy changes that can help. If the US' massive military budget is reduced even by just 10% it could have a huge economic benefit on many US citizens. If you want more movies made in the US then do what other countries do and offer subsidies to entice Hollywood to do so instead of again blaming other countries and threatening more tariffs which is only going to make going to the movies more expensive for Americans and further cripple the US film industry.

That part was obviously rhetorical

I know

because the days of america being a supply country is thing of the past. That ship has long sailed. Duh.

That can change for example, Biden said that he can’t shut the border down without the help of Congress, Trump gets in and closes it down within 20 days by EO. Anything can be done or changed if there is a willingness do do so ans with effort and fortitude.

And you can't lower the standard of living to making manufacturing cheaper and cost efficient.

I disagree, by like I keep saying libs are lazy, they look at a fixable situation and their lazy brains say, it can’t be done whatever it is. This is why they are unemployed

If you knew it was rhetorical, why the comment. LOL!

You're talking immigration which is clear domestic issue that can be changed solely internally and comparing it to something that is subject to global factors. Both democrats and republicans were/are involved in the transition from supply to demand economies because it happened over decades under the watch of both parties. Blaming the democrats is just more partisan politics. It's also the result of normal economic development. As GDPs rise so does the standard of living, wages, expenses, etc.

But instead of mindlessly blaming democrats, what is your plan for making manufacturing in the US cheaper and cost efficient. It certainly isn't fly by the seat of your pants trade tariffs that flip flop every week, falsely laying the blame on other countries, and making american products even more expensive thus further decreasing their sales.

If you claim to be an expert of the industry, then you should know that this is only one part of their troubles.

True

But the main point is that it's cheaper and more cost efficient to film overseas just as it's cheaper and more cost efficient to manufacture overseas.

And that should change to some degree, I think we should try everything to reverse that as much as humanly possible, not just throw are hands up and just accept your premise as the status quo and just deal with it. No, we should not, again, we should try everything.

Filming overseas is helping the American movie industry survive by lowering expenses. Like lot's of manufacturing, the US is too expensive. The American movie industry is having trouble because it's creatively dead and they make a lot of bad movies.
