Some of the early news feeds mistakenly described it as only a 'smoke bomb'; this misinformation got picked up and passed around (by the BBC included) and stuck in people's minds for months afterwards.

Been ill for the last ten days. At first I was unable to sleep for three days with the worst sore throat I've ever had, with streams of clear yucky stuff, but after several days it changed to more cold-like symptoms. It doesn't yet seem to get better in the way ordinary colds used to. I've still got a sharp pain in my ear/jaw on chewing solids, and my left eye weeps as though I'm crying. I do not want to bring this to the doctor's office as it's bearable and there's no point in spreading it. Taking the usual precautions and holding faith that the old body will cure itself in due course.
I wonder what it was?

Some kind of smash and grab? But they'd have to have driven the getaway vehicle really slowly, mega easy over the potholes. When they are caught and grilled, they may face frying in the electric chair.

The US today is like Tombstone, not wanting to be regulated or controlled. The cowboys rule the roost and it's chaos in town. The people are afraid, but no-one has the guts to stand up to the Clantons and McLaurys, not even the Sheriff, and there is little respect for the law.
Then the Earps impose some rules, regulations, law, whatever you want to call it. No guns in town, register them upon arrival at the hotel or livery stable, and they expect folks to have faith and stick by the basic rules. Nothing too radical. Just some sensible tweaks in place, enough to hold the peace. Simples.

Posted in: Massive sinkhole in Saitama highlights risk of old pipes See in context
Good article in the use of steel-reinforced sewage pipes which were popular post war as it says above. (Brick construction is not part of the present problem.) The problem in Japan is the corrosive sewer gases which attack the integrity of the concrete used.
Materials Used for Construction of Sewer | Sewage | Sanitary Engineering
(From www.engineeringnotes.com, for educational purposes.)
Quote: Now a days cement concrete is extensively used in the construction of sewer lines. These may be precast or cast in situ. Precast pipes are manufactured by centrifugal process using steel reinforcement, and are known as ‘Hume Pipes’. Hume pipes are manufactured in 10 cm to 250 cm in diameter and in 1.0 m to 3 m lengths.
These pipes are strong, smooth and light in weight. These are generally joined by collar joints. Plain concrete pipes may be used up to 60 cm diameter but above it the pipes must be reinforced. Precast pipes are manufactured in factories and are then transported to the site. The reinforcement of R.C.C. pipes consists of a welded steel cylinder or steel wire mesh.
Cement concrete pipes are not more durable and have short life, because they are corroded by sanitary sewage gases. These are most suitable for combined-sewer and storm water sewer, because in such cases its life is increased.
These pipes are subjected to corrosion where acid discharges are carried in the sewer or where the velocities are not sufficient to prevent the septic conditions or where the soil is highly acidic or contains excessive sulphates. Protective coatings should be used inside outside where excessive corrosion is likely to occur. Only high alumina cement concrete should be used when the sewer is exposed to corrosive sewage or industrial wastes.

Posted in: Environmental workers race to clear toxic debris left by LA fires See in context
They do not mention the huge battery plant fire fire that released far more toxicity last week.
LA Times, quote: When a massive fire erupted at one of the world’s largest lithium-ion battery storage facilities in Monterey County, it didn’t just send plumes of smoke over nearby communities — it cast a pall over the future of California’s clean energy industry.
The fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant, which ignited on Jan. 16, burned for five days and ultimately destroyed around 80% of the batteries inside the building. Now, as the smoke clears, Monterey-area officials warn that the blaze may be a harbinger as the state increases its reliance on renewable energy, electric vehicles and other battery-powered devices.
“I know green is good, but we’ve got to move slowly,” Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church told The Times. “What we’re doing with this technology is way ahead of government regulations and ahead of the industry’s ability to control it.”
