It wasn't a shell, but eight bombs mistakenly dropped by a Korean Air Force KF-16 jet. Only once detonated, apparently. Oops...

We have one of these at the local shrine, also sixty steps. Each evening they take the whole display down, and each morning they set it out again. Sadly there is rain forecast for the next couple of days...

There is much truth in the above. Refuelling added excitement, but after a couple of smallish fiery incidents it was deemed too dangerous.

Forcing an extra tyre (tire) change though, injects a few moments of uncertainty, but seems forced and unnatural, and maybe a waste of good rubber.

Plenty of unexploded bombs still being found every year in Japan. Okinawa has plenty.

A quick search of the internet will tell you that for example an average of one WW2 bomb per day is discovered somewhere in Okinawa alone, and 1,000 a year in Japan in general.

Watching this on the TV news, these fires jumping around ot of control, very dry forests, whole hills on fire, and strong winds. Reminds me of the LA fires, and I feel so sorry for the home owners watching their properties going up in flames. Wishing strength to the firefighters!

The headline is more sensational than the poster itself.

Just an appeal to people to be not quite so preoccupied, and to consider others around them.

Rather than use this as criticism of China, which will only harden the authorities against Dong, surely an unemotional fact-based appeal would be of more use here.

Smartphone great for most things, but for shots of wildlife you need something to help you get close, sharp images. I still have an old Nikon Coolpix S7000 which gets some great shots not possible with the smartphone.

Tempted to upgrade...

Posted in: 9-year-old girl breaks leg after being hit by skier in Nagano See in context

The article clearly says the skier crashed into her from behind. She broke her shin bone. I can imagine that the adult was out of control, but still, they should have said something at the bottom of the slope.

Hoping that there were witnesses and a useful description.

I hope she continues to love skiing, but fear that she may have lost her trust in humanity.

It sounds more like a Trump loyalty test. If you refuse to answer the questionnaire, you're fired.

Comply with the request, whatever you write, and maybe you'll keep your job, but you just demonstrated obedience to the new crew.

Posted in: Gov't OKs bill allowing hunters to shoot bears in populated areas See in context

Pretty sure the ultimate sanction would still only be decided after endless debate among the police and members of the local or municipal hunting party as to whether catch and release might be better and possible.

I really don’t see individuals going off on a trigger-happy arcade shoot scenario, as some of the comments above seem to imagine.
