Posted in: Japan is not doing enough to avoid 'toilet panic' in disasters See in context

We have one regular toilet and one compost toilet in our house. The compost toilet needs very little water. Probably not a feasible option in cities.

I feel much more reassured after reading that.

Posted in: 'Spirited Away' hot spot limits crowds to protect retro charm See in context

This kind of reporting just stokes xenophobia and casts society into two groups: Japanese people (never part of the problem) and ‘foreigners’ (everyone else/the problem).

Posted in: 'Spirited Away' hot spot limits crowds to protect retro charm See in context

Locals complain of having to clean up after foreign tourists who leave a mess.

Notice how it’s written as ‘foreign tourists’ as though people know for sure who left the litter behind. Why not just say ‘tourists’? How do you know they were foreign? I’ve seen Japanese people throwing whole bags of litter into the river and countryside round where I live.
