Posted in: Trump clears path for Nippon Steel investment in U.S. Steel, so long as it fits the government's terms See in context

*Trump said Thursday that he would as president have “total control” of what U.S. Steel did as part of the investment.*

Hahahahahah! This from an individual who has declared bankruptcy multiple times! And overseas a country with $36 TRILLION in debt!

Oooohhh the irony of this looming fiasco.

Sorry Nippon Steel.

Posted in: Farmed production of some fish - and seaweed - is soaring See in context

The amount of farmed seafood we consume -- as opposed to that taken wild from our waters -- is soaring every year, making aquaculture an ever-more important source for many diets, and a response to overfishing.

Great news. Here in Oita prefecture farmed seafood include various seaweed, buri, noble scallops, and flounder. Please ask the local farms for a quick tour, they will happily oblige.

Dare anyone to "taste" the difference between farmed and wild seafood. You cannot.

The Defense Department has committed $439 million to building domestic rare earth supply chains, but building a complete mining and processing industrial chain like China's could take decades.

Wait a minute, let's shake our heads and clear our eyes. The 2025 GOP spending bill provides $300M to pay for Trump’s golf trips.

The United States of Waste is rudderless.

This is a good spot to remind everyone that Japan’s criminal justice system does not fool around when it comes to drugs, and Souza’s arrest not becoming public knowledge until more than a month after the incident means that anyone caught smuggling is likely to be sitting in lockup for a very long time even if they somehow manage to avoid going to trial.

Note to self : don't smuggle cocaine ⎛⎝( ' ᢍ ´ )⎠⎞

Posted in: Taiwan seeks collective deterrence with Japan, U.S. against China See in context

.·°՞(˃ ᗜ ˂)՞°·.

You thinks wrong.

That's not in the Constitution per se. But an interpretation of Article 9 in 2015 now allows Japan to apply Collective Defense if (1) A Close Ally is attacked (2) Japan's own survival is at stake and (3) No other options exist.

It's fairly easy to see how a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan might involve US forces, which masy come under attack. It is also easy to see how a conflict over Taiwan will affect the sea routes that supply Japan's needed energy and raw materials.

Absolutely get a chuckle out of the predictability of comments of some JT readers!

Does the current Japanese constitution even allow for the real world activities actually required by "active collective deterrence"?

Posted in: New agriculture minister Koizumi says he will put rice before anything See in context

Japanese rice demand has decreased over recent decades as people's diets have diversified, but rice remains a staple food and integral part of Japanese culture and history.

True. Love some freshly cooked Japanese white rice and also brown rice 50/50 mix. It's delicious and the texture is perfect for sushi.

However, when making a chahan/yakimeshi dish or a heavy donburi dish or a rich curry dish, maybe the delicate Japanese rice can be substituted for another rice strain from outside Japan. Problem solved?

No wait, let's intolerably dwell on a supply chain issue, that's much more fun ;-)

AI -- ChatGPT -- "What are similarities between French and Japanese cuisines?"

ChatGPT said:

French and Japanese cuisines, though culturally distinct, share several core similarities that reflect their deep culinary traditions and philosophies:

Emphasis on Seasonality (Terroir & Shun)

- French cuisine values terroir—the idea that ingredients reflect the geography, climate, and culture of a region.

- Japanese cuisine uses the concept of shun, meaning ingredients are best enjoyed at the peak of their season.

Toyota on Thursday forecast a 35 percent year-on-year drop in net profit.

Well, if the trade tariff deal making activities were like a poker game (oh wait it is analogous to a poker game) then Toyota just made a big tell regarding the importance of profitability for the USA / N. American market.

Posted in: Japan tariff envoy departs for round two of U.S. talks See in context

Japanese style of problem solving considers long-term, whole effect ramifications. Whereas, tDump is more short-term, win/lose thinking.

Japanese culture also doesn't condone irrational, "say something today and say something else tomorrow" conduct. Thus negotiation with tDump will prove elusive.

Solution. For this instance only, just tell the USA what they want to hear. Get a deal and remove the tariffs. Japan's economy will get back on good footing. tDump will be gone in 3 years.
