Posted in: What advice would you give to someone who has experienced rejection from someone they like, but is having trouble letting go of their feelings for that person? See in context

Do not depend on someone else for your own happiness. If someone comes along, add it to the happiness that you already have. Do not take away some or all of your happiness and give it to them. This way if the person leaves for whatever reason, you will always return to your own full happiness. This will provide you with a sense of security during the relationship and lessen the impact of a potential break up.

Hope this makes sense.

Just what the hell does that signal in the picture mean? Why is a red light present?

I've been asking myself that question ever since coming to Japan... I learned very quickly that a "red light" in Japan means "continue through the intersection" without a care in the world. As indicated by all drivers young and old.

All things considered... the rise in the cost of living in Japan pales in comparison to the vast majority of other countries and economies. With my wife's and my average salaries, our family has felt minimal impacts on our daily lifestyle routines. But we understand that things could change...

When you die you are off the hook. RIP

But for your family, they are not. The responsibility is placed on them to take care of your remains. This can be a very stressful, extremely complicated and costly procedure especially when done internationally.

a male employee of technology firm NEC Corp was arrested for allegedly raping a female university student and later fired. Although he was not prosecuted,...

How the he.. do you expect anything to change if this is what happens when someone is raped!

Sorry but when you have a country run by oyajis who still think that women are not equal to men, nothing will ever change. Change needs to start at the top... but we all know that that will not happen anytime soon. Especially with the current state of the world.

Japan is great in many things but equality, especially for women, is not one of them.

The self-checkout is in Japanese and he is a foreign who may not have fully understood.

Most self-checkouts that I have seen have an "English" option. Especially those in the big chain conbinis.

Posted in: 98% with mixed Japanese heritage experience microaggressions: survey See in context

Sounds familiar. Here's one that sometimes occurs: you are with your Japanese spouse in a department store and ask a question of the 店員in perfect Japanese (after 35 years here, I am fluent), and they then ignore you and respond while looking at your spouse (as if to say, "this gaijin will probably not understand what I am about to say, so I will address the spouse to be sure.")

More than sometimes, sorry to say.

Whenever this happened whether in a restaurant or some other place, I would usually speak up and ask why they are responding to my wife and not to me directly? This was often followed by a blank stare on the staff's face. However, this was causing a lot of tension whenever we as a family would go out to eat. My wife did her best to understand my reasons for being frustrated but was having a hard time dealing with the tense situations. So I decided to bite my lip for the sake of my family and not take it to heart when this sort of thing happened. Most Japanese do not even realize that they are being rude (microaggressive) as this is a sub-conscience response to speaking to someone who does not look "Japanese".

Yasukuni also includes a museum that portrays Japan largely as a victim of US aggression in WWII and makes scant reference to the extreme brutality of invading Imperial troops when they stormed through Asia.

Posted in: Man arrested over deaths of ex-wife, 3 kids at Tokyo home in May See in context

Probably the man was never at home and the wife simply couldn't manage everything alone, leading to this conflict and conclusion.

There are many families around the world living in this same scenario but to connect it to the conclusion of killing your wife and children is inaccurate to say the least. This is an extremely rare outcome and takes someone with deep rooted psychological issues to carry out.

Posted in: Elderly woman dies after her neck gets caught under Tokyo store's escalator rail See in context

Stop buttons might be a good idea. However for the people riding the escalator when the button is activated, their momentum would carry them forward causing potentially more injuries or worse. Especially for those going down.

Having staff placed at the top and bottom of the escalator to help with customers may be an idea. Especially with the aging population. It seems like a win win situation. People get jobs/ people get help.

Posted in: In Kyoto and other heavily visited cities, some residents grumble about being priced out of hotel rooms or crowded out of buses and restaurants. Do you think this is a valid complaint? See in context

In my experience, most residents living in these areas tend to take the "tourist attractions" for granted as these sites are a constant part of their everyday environment. It may be up to the municipalities to come up with alternative commuting options for the locals during high seasons.

Posted in: Japanese convenience store allows use of initials on name tags to prevent harassment by customers See in context

As much as I agree with using initials, I disagree with listing the employees position/ rank as that may encourage a degree of "looking down upon" to the clerk. A potentially irate customer may think that this "crew" staff has no power and will want to speak to someone of a higher rank. I only think it may add fuel to the fire.
