If they'd asked the Brits it'd all be called Saucy McSauceface.

I'm used to this with the MOT (done annually when I left). I get my servicing done at the same time as the shaken as part of a service pack, so it sails through (fingers crossed, touch wood etc) and the car feels so much better for it at the end.

When I was in the UK I used to practice Bangernomics (buy an old car and keep it running as long as possible). Only thing I never scrimped on was an annual service with a decent garage that did the MOT at the same time. I had cars bought for less than a thousand quid running over one hundred thousand miles and meeting emission standards without problem.

I'm treating my current kei the same. Bit of TLC means she should keep running for a few years yet.

@Jim. I am also a Brit, although I live in Japan and work with data for a living.

Using DVLA new vehicle registration data, Toyota has consistently out performed Nissan since Q1 2019 where 36,500 new Toyotas were registered versus 33,800 Nissans. Prior to this, Nissan indeed held a significant lead over Toyota, although it was in trouble by the start of 2018.

Last quarter recorded was q3, 2023, where 38,923 Toyotas registered for the first time, versus 27,662 Nissans.

Source is Data Vehicle Licencing Statistics on gov.uk, file reference df_VEH0160_UK. I excluded Infinity and Lexus brands as Infinity was discontinued and would only push Toyota's lead further (and perhaps unfairly given target markets).

Posted in: Record 18,709 people with dementia reported missing in Japan in 2022 See in context

@bofington "This is an alarmingly high number of people with dementia going missing in a single year."

Depends if it's individuals or reports. In the UK I lived next door to a very old gent with quite serious dementia. He'd vanish about once a week and turn up at his old house convinced the current owner was his wife.

That was a couple of dozen police reports in the statistics for one individual. Then there were the reports we made to get the cops around because his wife couldn't open the front door and was screaming for help.

All very sad and distressing for all concerned.
