That Iranian announcer should have kept reading the news like Alvar Liddell did in WW2.

"During a wartime broadcast, a bomb fell only a few yards from the BBC's Portman Place studio. Despite the huge explosion, Mr. Lidell carried on unruffled"

I watched Threads again recently. It was made in 1984 but hasn't lost any of its power. The nuclear war in the film that wipes out most of humanity starts in Iran ...

Posted in: Japan upper house election set for July 20: report See in context

Ishiba is going to be one of the greatest PMs in Japanese history. I just love him -- he can do no wrong in my eyes. We are so lucky to be part of the ongoing LDP success story.

You are so right. Things can only get better with Ishiba in charge. I can't think of a single negative thing to say about him.

I read in the New Yorker that the price tag for a one-on-one conversation with Trump is $5 million. Wow.

The US is a kleptocracy now. Akazawa will be out of his depth in the Washington shark tank. Would have been a better idea to send a billionaire. Trump respects people who have made it.

I am not easily shocked, but I was horrified by this story. They can't be human. Those poor kids.

We are indeed fortunate to have so many experts commenting on JT.

I'm not one of them, but I do know that bipolar people can behave strangely -- I have a gifted friend with this condition. Hirosue's story just sounds like something that was cooked up by her lawyers.

Posted in: Inflation, hotel prices curtail Golden Week travel See in context

When it comes to traveling abroad, that is verging on being an "unattainable luxury"

The era of cheap travel is dead. I'm glad I made the most of it. Don't really have the energy now.

The sad thing about Japan is that most Japanese people can't even afford to travel in their own country now.

nowhere near as devastating as bi-polar disorder, which can effectively remove a person from functioning in society

But not devastating enough to prevent you from beating up a poor nurse who was only trying to help you.

She should have been charged with assault.

I once saw JR staff scraping the remains of a jumper from the tracks

Strange thing to be looking at.

I can't unsee what I saw. It was awful. Would never have seen something like that if I lived in the sticks like most JT readers.

I once saw JR staff scraping the remains of a jumper from the tracks. They put them into a cardboard box. What an awful job. Suicidal people are so selfish, only thinking of their own petty problems.

Makes it sound like the driver was to blame. Someone wanted to top themselves. Stick your head in an oven if you can't take it anymore, but don't make people late for work.

President Trump and his wife will attend the funeral.

He also signed an executive order that proclaimed all federal and state flags across the U.S. to be flown at half-mast in the Pope's memory.

i hate to admit it, but Trump has a point. I'm tired of buying crap that quickly wears out (Uniqlo isn't what it used to be). I don't care if it's cheap. I would be happy to pay more for products that aren't made by exploited workers.

I think these criminal gangs including such as Yakuzians can only exist if the politians collude with them, otherwise such mafias can't survive in the face of so powerful states.

That may have been true in the distant past. But the idea that the LDP is collaborating with Chinese and Vietnamese gangsters is a bit of a stretch for a party that basically hates foreigners and would be happy if we all went back to wherever we came from.
