After construction delays, they now can't get enough staff to operate the pavilions. Many countries have left it too late to install equipment and secure staff.

LDP - Liberal Democratic Party.

Not Liberal, hardly Democratic and certainly not a Party.

Japan has played the role of the 'unsinkable aircraft carrier' for the US against the the 'Commie' threat, much like the UK has in Europe.

Carrying a backpack is not necessarily backpacking in the cassic sense of the word. Suit cases and wheelie cases don't go well with flights of steps at stations, cobbled streets, long walks to bus stations, etc.. not everywhere is 'barrier-free'.

It will take at least 500 people from the Cabinet, Foreign Office, Finance, Defence and other ministries around 5 months to prepare and circulate a carefully-crafted 50 word paragraph of opaque, meaningless niceties that will appease everyone, and yet say nothing. Bureaucracy at its finest!

There is a lot of manual 'Back Office' support required.

One of the old-fashioned puppet-masters would pulled the strings behind the organisation. All employees required to pay homage to him. A sort of business daimyo! Many companies still have these relics.

Posted in: A Cabinet Office survey reveals that more than 80% of poll respondents in Japan support the death penalty. What's your stance on the death penalty? See in context

With a history of forced confessions, manipulation of evidence, and omissions of evidence that could help defence: the chances of hanging innocent people are high. Serious oversight is required.

The judges will follow the establishment/ government policy. They always have done. None of them would risk a career-disputing decision, or go against the state.

After their Rings of Power abomination, they will certainly shake up, even stir the 007 franchise. Does not bode well for M, Q, Moneypenny and the rest of the folks.

Still have a '6' that enables you to talk, listen, text, read, email, browse, play music, take snaps and see where you are on the map. Battery capacity is down to 72%, but it's enough for a day or two. Company gave me a 16Pro for work though.

Anyone who has done cave diving knows how hard it is swim against a current of water; add to that disorientation in the dark, possible shock, injury or concussion from the accident, wearing heavy working clothes that are cold and quickly water-soaked. The outcome is inevitable. Just hope it was quick. RIP driver.

This is getting to look more and more like the film Gung Ho, the fictional story of a Japanese car company taking over a failing US car company, with all of the accompanying headaches and conflicts as they strove to integrate and become a success.

The film had a happy ending, no idea if real life will follow the same script.

Posted in: Inside buildings, there are some areas with high radiation levels where workers can be easily contaminated, but people can work safely if proper measures are taken. See in context

The original 'nuclear gypsies' who used to do clean up work at Japan's nuclear power plants were employed through up to 8 layers of personnel dispatch companies, and when they developed cancers, were told that there were no records of them working at the plants, hence no evidence, and that as they were not directly employed by the utilities, they had no responsibility towards them.

Asians and other nationals were employed to change the reactor vessel innards many years ago, as they were allowed to receive higher cumulative doses of radiation than Japanese workers, and despite numerous accounts and evidence of them working there, their employer at the time (H) to this day denies it ever occurred.

The usual winter precautions. Drive sensibly, watch your speed, and avoid tailgating. Keep a warm coat, gloves, hat, and blanket in your car, along with plenty of drinks and some emergency food. The walking sleeping bags are great - ugoku-nebukuro. Rope and shovel are handy, and don't take up much space, along with snow chains. Stay safe. Stay warm.

Posted in: Do you keep photos of your relatives who have passed away, those still living, including your children, as well as memorable family events such as weddings, birthdays, etc, on your mantle or in albums at home, or are all your photos just online? See in context

My sister and I have slides going back to the 1950s from my father, plus our own from the 1970s, and family photos going back to 1914, inc family members in WW1 uniforms, and we are both trying to digitise them. We periodically share them with wider family members around the world, but fewer and fewer have any interest in people and scenes from the past.

As children, we remember many picture shows with family and neighbours, usually holiday images, with a slide projector, carousel and a portable, wobbly screen; laughing, joking, crying, along with food and drinks; nowadays it is just 2-3 people swiping silently and quickly through a smartphone.

Progress...
