For more than half a century, the Japanese government has encouraged its rice farmers to grow less of the crop so that prices of the national staple grain remained relatively high and steady.

It'll get better as soon as the humidity drops, and the days get shorter, so hang in there for a few more tough weeks ahead!

1995 Owada Case: I used to live near that area and have been looking into the case for years. That supermarket was a front for the distribution of meth. The 3 victims found out, unfortunately. The police know this. The reason the police STILL have posters up asking for help with this case is to distract from the fact they know exactly what happened and who was involved. The new distribution locale is the Lawson across the street from Daie in Owadamachi.

@grund

Lower tax for food, higher for other less essential items.

Food should never be taxed. It's a tax on the poor. And just downright evil.

Shrinkflation: The bag of assorted nuts I usually get from the conbini was recently reduced in weightt from 77g to 70g -- no price change.

The media harps on about how hot and humid it is year after year. Meanwhile Japan just keeps on laying down more concrete and removing the trees.

One of the reasons I moved to Japan is because I had heard that Japanese respect Nature. Starting to have my ddoubts. Or maybe it's just really poor city planning. You'd think the Japanese would excel at merging urban spaces with nature.

China is a major importer of Iranian oil.

Japan imports quite a lot of stuff from Iran, too.

Trump sucks. I used to favor Trump over Biden/Obama. Trump is a war-mongering POS, same as Bush. The US uni-party needs to be toppled.

@Jay

There’s a difference between being afraid and being aware. Being prepared, questioning motives, or standing your ground doesn’t mean living in fear - it means being able to think critically, and actually having a spine.

Agreed. I'd say being aware and ready to adapt / resist is the opposite of living in fear. Courageous caution.

But while we're asking questions: why is your default setting is always set at "defeat"?

Normalcy bias. Especially popular with the Brits. "Oh, bother." - Winnie the Pooh accepts defeat

Posted in: Are traffic lights in Japan confusing? See in context

At many intersections, traffic lights could be replaced by roundabouts. They are much safer and much more economical.

Roundabouts don't suit Japan. Some drivers are too polite, yielding to everyone, getting nowhere to the frustration of those behind them. And some others (old men), who won't yield to anyone, in typical entitled fashion. Accidents and road-rage incidents will increase with the use of roundabouts in Japan.
