Posted in: How crucial is immigration for U.S. hotel industry? See in context

Legal immigrants in the U.S. overwhelming support the Trump Administration's crackdown on illegal immigrants. Make of that what you will. Personally, I think it is due to a resentment of those who chose not to take the legal path that they had taken and the reality that unlawful criminal aliens are primarily committing their crimes in immigrant communities.

Posted in: Top court rejects appeal by doctor over euthanasia of ALS patient See in context

ALS is a very cruel disease that eventually robs patients of the ability to control any muscles. My mother-in-law has ALS and has been suffering for years, surviving only by a feeding tube, unable to communicate with her family - no words, no gestures, not even the blink of an eye possible. My wife and her family now feel guilt after being pressured by the doctor to allow the feeding tube, with no discussion of how the disease would inevitably progress and the toll it would take. Had they known their mom would suffer in silence for years in a care facility, they never would have agreed. No one who knew the mom would think this is what she would want. Compassionate end of life care must be allowed. An 18-year prison sentience for this doctor, when child murderers routinely get less than a decade, is a terrible injustice.

We are treated to the scene of proud Mexicans, waving Mexican flags and celebrating all things Mexican, vigorously objecting to the deportation of Mexican citizens unlawfully in this country to Mexico as somehow being cruel and unusual punishment.

Noticeably absent from these protests are Blacks residents of Los Angeles. Why? Mexican gangs attacked and violently forced out Blacks from Los Angeles neighborhoods like Compton and Inglewood under orders of the Mexican Mafia prison gang. It's an uncomfortable truth.

The rumor went around that there is a Trump punching bag. Roll up. Roll up.

Trump and his critics both operate from the premise that he is at the center of everything.

Posted in: Australian state plans to ban sale of machetes following violent gang fight See in context

It's odd that increasing minimum mandatory prison sentences on those guilty of machete attacks is never put forth. Instead it is always collective punishment - if you require a machete for bush work around your property, tough luck. Meanwhile, the mall brawlers will be released and promptly acquire a replacement machete since they are unconcerned with laws in the first place.

This is all a MacGuffin. US carmakers have no goal of increasing car exports to Japan. It's all about the car parts market.

Posted in: As dementia rates increase in U.S., experts warn hospital emergency rooms are underprepared See in context

Not a lot of profit in treating aged people with compassion.

There is actually a huge amount of money spent treating aged people with compassion, but often without concern for efficacy or cost-benefit consideration as long as Medicare or other insurance is paying for it. My mother is 86 years old and I'm amazed at the pointless diagnostics and labs that her doctors order given her advanced age. They still send her for an annual mammogram and colonoscopy - what is the point for an 86 year old since any treatment, if sign of a tumor or polyp were detected, would not extend her life? Another doctor sent her for a bone density scan - what possible treatment could be offered to an 86 year old for low bone density if it were to be identified? The doctors are simply maximizing their billing. That money would be better directed to treatment and preventative healthcare for young people.

As far as this article and ER response to a dementia patient having an episode, it simply isn't the role of an ER to handle these acute episodes. The ER staff has to triage patients. I sympathize with his family, but understand that a car accident victim with major trauma is going to have to come first and that is not a matter of "dignity".

Posted in: Most of the 200 million iPhones Apple produces each year are made in China. What effect will U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs have on their price? See in context

There were be very little change in retail price to US consumers as Apple pressures its suppliers to lower prices in response to the tariffs and reduces its own margins to maintain market share. Furthermore, China will fade even further from its role in the global supply chain.

I remember a Canadian friend of mine in the 90s who put a patch of the Canadian flag on his backpack, thinking he was going to score points with the Vietnamese who must have been still resentful of the war, only to find that the Vietnamese he talked to were disappointed that he wasn't American. The US and Vietnam are becoming allies and share a common goal in reducing the toxic influence of the Chinese Communist Party.

She was in the United States on an F1 student visa. Posted in: 30 years after deadly Tokyo subway gas attack, survivors and victims' families still seeking closure See in context

The police raid on Aum's headquarters did not take place two days after the subway gassing. It took place months later. I remember watching the surreal scene on live TV as the riot squad marched behind a cage with a canary. The death toll on the subway could have been much worse if the Aum terrrorists hadn't thankfully made some errors in the sarin deployment. There was a later attempt at Shinjuku, largely forgotten, that was foiled by a diligent cleaning woman who located the device in a restroom. She deserved recognition that was never given. Another forgotten part of this sad history is the poor man, Yoshiyuki Kono, who lived near the Matsumoto incident and was falsely accused by the media for being responsible. The mass media made his life hell.
