This being SoraNews, I doubt we'll get any, but if ever a news item needed or deserved a follow-up, this is It. There are way too many unanswered questions here.

I'm glad someone (Isreal) has the balls to stand up and fight against terrorist scum (Iran). Certainly the U.S. hasn't been doing much to bring an end to that horrible regime.

How does it impair their ability to function? If AI is sending out their news, they are getting more coverage. Seems to me they are getting free advertising.

@englisc

You must not have been living in Japan for very long. There is no such thing as debate in Japanese elections. Just a bunch of oyajis screaming at people "Yoroshiku onegai-shimasu!" disturbing the peace.

Posted in: Japan condemns Israel's attack on Iran for escalating situation See in context

And the bumbling idiot Ishiba puts his foot in his mouth again. How dare he condemn a righteous attack against a terrorist nation? Israel has every right to make a preemptive attack before their enemy can put together a weapon of mass destruction. Iran and the world should be praising Israel for their restraint in not using their own nuclear weapons against such a vile

We took a long time considering different kanji for our children's names. On the one hand, I can see the need to give some kind of guidelines. I have a hard enough time reading some of the usual names of my students, never mind those that are impossible to read even for native Japanese. On the other, a name is the first gift parents give to their child, and their wishes should be respected.

While failure to pay is a problem, it doesn't seem to be that big a problem if less than 1% are doing so. Still, requiring insurance seems like a good idea.

Posted in: How do you feel about employers using AI in the recruitment process for new employees? See in context

ChatGPT's response:

The use of AI in recruitment has both potential benefits and serious risks, and how one feels about it often depends on how it's being used. Here's a balanced view:

Potential Benefits

Efficiency: AI can process thousands of applications much faster than humans, saving time and money.

Consistency: It can apply the same criteria to all applicants, potentially reducing human bias.

Data Insights: AI tools can analyze trends in hiring and performance, helping employers refine their processes.

Concerns and Risks

Bias Amplification: If the training data is biased (which it often is), AI can perpetuate or even worsen discrimination—based on gender, race, age, etc.

Lack of Transparency: Applicants often don't know how they're being evaluated, which can make the process feel unfair or dehumanizing.

Overreliance: Employers might trust AI too much and overlook strong candidates who don’t "score well" by automated metrics.

Privacy Issues: AI systems often rely on large datasets, sometimes including information scraped from social media or other non-consensual sources.

Bottom Line

AI can be a helpful tool in recruitment, but only if used ethically, transparently, and in combination with human judgment. Employers should audit their systems regularly for bias and ensure applicants understand how their data is being used. Used thoughtfully, AI can support fairness and efficiency—but used carelessly, it can do real harm.

Posted in: In your experience, how hard or easy is it to get a driver's license in Japan? What were the written and driving tests like? See in context

I've lived here long enough that I just had to offer a translation of my US (Georgia) license and get a Japanese one. The guy took me out on the course, but it wasn't so much a "test" as it was just to make sure I wouldn't end up in the rice paddies. There was one sign he tested me on that I didn't know. It looked like a couple of lightning bolts. I honestly told him I didn't know, fearing that I wouldn't get the license, but he politely told me that it was for honking my horn (where visibility was obstructed) and that it wasn't a very common sign. I don't think I've ever seen one out in the wild.

A few years ago my daughter went to driving school and she showed me the textbook they used. It was so detailed and elaborate, I don't know how anyone in Japan actually ever passes.
