More than 8,000 emails threatening to kill a 27-year-old local assembly member in central Japan were sent after she posted on social media calling for menstrual products to be made available in public restrooms.
Ayaka Yoshida, a member of the Mie prefectural assembly, said she filed a complaint with local police on Monday. One of the emails sent to the assembly's secretariat mocked her, saying, "At her age, she should know to carry emergency sanitary napkins."
According to the secretariat, emails threatening the life of Yoshida, a member of the Japanese Communist Party, were sent at roughly one-minute intervals between 8 p.m. on Friday and 3:50 p.m. on Monday. All were sent from the same email address.
Yoshida posted on X last week, "I was caught off guard by my period and was in trouble, as there were no sanitary napkins in the restroom at Tsu City Hall. I hope menstrual pads can be provided like toilet paper." Tsu is the capital of Mie Prefecture.
At a press conference on Monday, Yoshida said such emails have "the effect of intimidating me and suppressing my activities as a prefectural assembly member."

Hello misogyny.
Yrral
Any man triggered by a woman period ,need to.get a life, some Japanese mens are clueless about women
Vanillasludge
The suspect can be identified by his extremely well developed typing fingers and complete lack of female contacts.
obladi
my guess is that the sender drives a black truck with a rising sun flag and loudspeaker.
Fighto!
Hopefully they catch this female-despising, piece of garbage psychopath, and jail him for a very long time.
WoodyLee
Another Psycho Misogynist on the loose, hopefully authorities will catch up with Him or Her soon.

OK, I get that women should take responsibility and prepare for any eventuality but… death threats!!??? Wooh way way too much!!!
Tokyo Guy
Hope each sentence ended correctly with a period.
Thank you, I'll be here all week.
PS, the above joke aside, agree that there are some seriously insecure guys on here...
zulander
Not a very controversial ask at all - Like obv there is a cost issue, but in a (still) high trust society such as Japan, why not provide this ?
Garthgoyle
The problem is not Japanese men being clueless about women. This is all from one email account. One messed up individual but ultimately, one person. Accusing a whole group of people for the actions of an individual, is probably what gets people to disagree with your comment.
Fighto!
I guarantee that those who oppose this simple request from a lawmaker do not have daughters. And most likely are, in general, absolutely terrified of all women.
GuruMick
1/ Sent from same email address....therefore one person likely
2/ Down votes on this forum are a mystery...maybe a poltergeist.
himawari23
Does this idiot (and every JT reader downvoting) realize they were born from a woman who menstruated? The world is bleak…
owzer
I wonder whether those who oppose the availability of menstrual products in public restrooms also take issue with providing other basic hygiene items, such as toilet paper.
It's a wonder. Or maybe just hypocrisy.
BakabonPapa
This is just more proof that some mentally-impaired people have too much free time.
Yohan
I was asking the same question myself. Japan has almost everywhere vending machines for almost everything.
There are vending machines for condoms in Japan, so why not for menstrual products?
Seigi
Granting that the government will "provide" it... what's next? When the toilet runs out of supply, will the taxpayers shoulder the replenishment all the time in order not to offend those who may need it? And which toilets? All public toilets? The last time I know, most kombinis have toilets too. I understand the need for women to have it, but come on! When I was in college, I had to buy my sister's sanitary napkins when she had her period. No biggies!

@Yohan
Vending machines are an easy solution for the same reason toilet paper is provided in locked dispensers.

Dear me.
I can imagine he spams social media with multiple handles complaining that women get preferential treatment and praises his own posts.
Don’t hate people because they don’t like you.

"The emails were sent at roughly one-minute intervals between 8 p.m. on Friday and 3:50 p.m. on Monday. All were sent from the same email address."
What does tell you? Most likely a bot was used or set to send those emails but by who?

@Seigi
My son buys my napkins and panty shields when he is still at grade school and now he is buying for his wife and she is very hapoy about it .

It can be anybody she or he, or even own self seeking public attention and no living miserable life than pleasing people to be liked.

This is a difficult one. In principle, I would agree. I also think that menstrual products should be free of sales tax. What is the definition of a "public toilet"? Any toilet that is open to the public. There are no figures for the total number of toilets in Japan. Many do not have soap.
The cost of stocking the menstrual products would be the local authorities or store owners.
If they were introduced many women would stop buying them and take the free ones. Alternatively, vending machines could be installed with a minimum charge.
In my 5 years of post-cancer, I wear diapers. I always have one or two spare in my bag along with a small kit for cleaning the toilet seat first. Disposal bags.
A woman can carry a tampon or two in her bag.
Like I said this is a difficult one.
But the nasty guy with the emails needs to be charged.
grc
sending threatening mails is such a cowardly way to express one’s views. But it suits the Japanese psyche it seems

According to ChatGPT
While exact nationwide figures are unavailable, Japan is renowned for its abundant and accessible public restrooms. For instance, Tokyo boasts approximately 53 public toilets per 100,000 residents, not including facilities in train stations and convenience stores. Additionally, as of August 2024, Japan features 1,221 roadside stations, each offering 24-hour access to public toilets. These examples underscore Japan's commitment to providing convenient and clean public restroom facilities nationwide.

I have no problem with her wanting sanitary napkins in the women's bathroom. They could at least put in a machine where you could purchase them but only in the women's bathroom.
proxy
A great option for her and all woman would be to stop using polluting plastic products and switch to reusable silicone menstrual cups.
wallace
What are the side effects of silicone cups?
Menstrual Cup: Usage, Benefits, Advantages and Disadvantages
However, in some women, the rubber and silicone material can cause allergic reactions, which can be very painful and discomforting. If the menstrual cup is not cleaned properly after every use, it can cause irritation in your vagina. If you insert it without using any lubrication, it may even cause discomfort and pain.
wallace
There used to be condom machines in men's toilets. They could have menstrual pad machines in the women's toilets.
virusrex
It takes no time to set up a spamming e-mail to continuously send the same email over and over again.
Silvafan
To do that, you would need a mass email program. That sound like it was probably politically motivated. That is what campaigners, marketers (spammers), and scammers use.
Someone mentally ill, a lonely frustrated oyagi in the boonies, a political rival, 2 out of 3 or all of 3.
girl_in_tokyo
Oh no, the downfall of civilization is here—women want tampons! Personal responsibility, ladies—why should public restrooms provide pads? Never mind that toilet paper is freely available —this is different, because… well reasons. And let’s not forget the real victims here—men—who are clearly oppressed by the idea that a few yen might go toward someone else’s basic hygiene. Truly, the men who bravely spammed thousands of bravely anonymous threats over this are the unsung heroes of our time.

How about men not telling women what we should do with our bodies?
John-San
I remember when I first started working in Japan with Japanese women in Hospitality. She were always stuck in the hotel without transport one her days off I remember telling this women on one of her days off offering a lift to the onsen she keep on refusing. In the end I told her that I was offended by her constance refusal. She apologise and said I would not understand. I said you can tell me anything. Then she said. It because each time you ask I had my periods. I said Sh%^ Yume. It natural. I understand then I apologise to her. Then she told me stories about how Japanese man respond very rudely if you mention periods. I just shook my head in amazement that grown man act like that. And according to this article they still do.
Do you know that a Japanese women with her period by shinto law can not visit sacred place like climb Fuji San or the local Ginger, How backwards.
Silvafan
It seems quite reasonable considering Japan is always flaunting the number of tourists visiting the country each year. We can assume that some are women.
If they are cheaper than store bought sanitary napkins, It would be a good source of income for the local governments, and it reduces the number of embarrassing moments for teenage girls and women.
It would also be one solution for the phenomenon of "Period Poverty."
wallace
girl_in_tokyo
While I support the idea in principle to stock all public toilets with menstrual products the cost would be much higher than a few yen.
Vending machines with menstrual products are the only way to make it work.
How do you deal with the problem?

girl_in_tokyo, a curated collection of quotes:
"Use a cup" was a very sensible suggestion and one of the solutions to the problem the politician initially faced. If you don't want people telling what do to, don't start the discussion to begin with.
If you're just as much as thinking about suggesting misogyny (as in 100% of your posts), you obviously don't realize that women use much more toilet paper than men.
wallace
in Japan, sanitary pads (napkins) are the overwhelmingly preferred choice for menstrual care, with studies indicating that around 90% of women prefer them over tampons or menstrual cups.
girl_in_tokyo
wallaceToday 02:50 pm JST
Yes, of course.
Providing them for free in all public restrooms would be cost-prohibitive, but it's simple and easy and cheap to put vending machines in restrooms.
Usually women deal with this by borrowing off each other. Likely this assembly member couldn't because she's probably the only woman in the assembly! Japan politics is a sausage fest and we all know it.
Silvafan
I never knew providing sanitary napkins to the women and young teenage girls in Japan would make Japanese men so "bloody" angry!

Just because a politician brings up a discussion about public health doesn’t mean it’s an open invitation for random men to tell women how to manage their own bodies.
Any man that even thinks he has the right to tell a woman what to do with her body is an act of incredible arrogance and misogyny on the part of that man.
Fighto!
To be fair, it is only the incels and women-haters getting angry over it. Most real men would be supportive.

What a completely insane behavior. But you see a lot of these types on social media and various comment boards. Overagressive, insulting people. You can feel the insecurities and hate seep out of every word. Trump fans. Victim complex. Usually very religious too. And anonymous, of course, because they're cowards.

How much you want to bet the posts were ALL made my adult males, probably middle-aged and older?

The overuse of plastics and their environmental impact is everyone's concern. All humans, regardless of gender should support less use of plastic when a solution such as silicone menstrual cups, than reduces the use of plastics can easily be implemented.
Don't be so selfish!

Micro-plastics. Selfishness. That's the problem here. Thanks for splaining.

Another option is moss based products that also reduce plastic use.
I have provide 2 suggestions to solve the problem; using menstrual cups that have the added benefit of reducing the use of plastic and coin operated dispensers. Both are reasonable solutions.

Most grateful for your informed suggestions. 本とに

Before we talk about what women should do with their bodies,..
How about we discuss single-use plastic waste in Japan.

I'm not sure how many times I need to remind people that what products women decide to use inside their own bodies is no one's business but their own, but here we are, once again, with people attempting to lecture women on What Women Should Do With Their Own Bodies.
But no one should tell anyone else what to do with their own bodies — bodily autonomy is a fundamental human right, and everyone has the right to make their own choices about their own health, comfort, and well-being without some random, uninvolved stranger inserting themselves into their personal business and trying to guilt-trip, push, persuade, cajole, or shame them - especially when that person will never experience that particular medical issue firsthand.
You are ignoring the fact that not every body is the same. Women reject cups for many personal reasons, and the assumption that a one-size-fits-all approach works ignores the complexity of individual needs.
Beyond that, there’s a bigger issue: men inserting themselves into a conversation about a biological process they will never experience and acting like their opinion matters more than the lived experiences of the people it actually affects. That’s classic mansplaining — men pretending to be an authority on something they know little about, while dismissing the voices of women, who actually live with it.
If the real concern is plastic waste, I urge you to consider the countless ways you can reduce your own plastic consumption without policing women’s bodies.
I hope that is all I need to say about that ... but knowing this page, someone is likely going to keep picking this fight over and over, because some people seem to live to lecture women.

Joining a Communist Party in JAPAN at her age, good Lord......
Deport her to a red country asap.

She is JAPANESE. How can the govt "deport" a national citizen?
You didn't think that through, did you?
